Dec 19, 2023

DEC. 22, 2022

Population trends are returning to pre-pandemic norms as the number of annual deaths decreased last year and migration reverted to patterns not seen since before 2020, according to the new Vintage 2023 population estimates released today by the U.S. Census Bureau. The nation gained more than 1.6 million people this past year, growing by 0.5% to 334,914,895. More states experienced population growth in 2023 than in any year since the start of the pandemic.

This year’s national population growth is still historically low but is a slight uptick from the 0.4% increase in 2022 and the 0.2% increase in 2021.

Iowa's population continues to show growth since 2020, up 0.5% to 3,207,004. Natural change (births minus deaths) was an increase of 6,375 while international migration into Iowa continues to increase as well. Data looking at the state rankings and components of change can be found on the State Data Center's website.
